The athletic team performs at home in front of their screens
When going back to campus became a distant dream, Lady Brabourne College took up the challenge of organising its annual Sports Day virtually.
Smiling faces with throbbing hearts eagerly waited for February 8, for a first-of-its-kind event from the college where the students performed the activities in front of their laptop or desktop screens at home.
“2020 has been an exceptionally unusual year due to the pandemic. I am very happy to see whole-hearted enthusiasm among our teachers as well as our students in arranging the Sports Day and in participating in it. I’m certain that the virtual annual athletic meet of our college will be a kind of pathfinder for other academic institutes, particularly during the pandemic,” said Siuli Sarkar, the principal of Lady Brabourne College.
The athletic team came up with sporting events like Yogasana, Go As You Like, Plank, Sit-ups, Skipping and Push-ups. Maintaining COVID-safety protocol, the inauguration was held on the college’s Beniapukur campus, where the principal and some professors came together to light the torch. A big screen was put up in the college auditorium for the professors who were judging.
“This was a good experience for the students who have missed coming to campus for so long,” said Ruchira Mandal, professor in the English department who was one of the judges.
Arma Alam, one of the student volunteers, took a pledge on behalf of all the participants, before the competition started. “We shall take part in virtual sports of our college, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sports and the honour of our team,” said Arma, a third-year undergraduate student of geography at Lady Brabourne College.
