A finance expert’s tips on how to transition into a “dynamic, fast-paced and high-paying” job
ABP Education chats with Vineet Patawari, co-founder and CEO of the Kolkata-based edtech platform Elearnmarkets, on how students can transition into a successful career in the stock market.

ABP Education: There’s very little awareness around careers in the stock market. What are the options available to students?
Vineet Patawari: Over the last five years, there has been an increase in the number of people investing in the stock market. Traditionally, people have been inclined towards fixed deposits in banks or gold as a mode of investment.
In the present scenario, people are exploring new avenues of investments like equity and mutual funds. This has created a demand for financial education in India.
The younger generation believes in doing it by themselves and not depending on any intermediaries. This very thirst for financial knowledge is giving a rise to bright career opportunities in the stock market.

If one wants to be a self-employed professional, would you recommend it and why? What are the opportunities for growth?
The stock market is one of the best fields to begin your career as a self-employed professional. Apart from the broader idea of becoming an investor or a trader, you have the option to set up your own firm such as a sub-broker, or registered investment advisor (RIA). You can also set up your own mutual fund distribution agency.
The stock market is rewarding for somebody who wants to be self-employed and make a career out of it. Besides building a career, it helps one to assess and allocate funds for their short-term or long-term financial goals.
What are some of the risks in this profession? What must one be aware of?
One of the major risks of the stock market is a lack of knowledge. One must not jump into the market without proper learning. To be successful, one needs to educate themselves to safeguard themselves, take calculated risks and ultimately achieve their goals efficiently.
What are the myths around having a career in this line?
Usually, the stock market is associated with a negative connotation of gambling, which is not the reality. Previously people were not much exposed to the financial sector, and they lacked financial literacy. Times are changing. The young generation is looking forward to learning and investing actively. Gradually, the myths around the stock market are shattering.
What must one study in college to enter this field?
Graduates in the field of commerce, finance and investment are usually preferred, but there is no specific qualification to start a career in the stock market.
What kind of training does one need to prepare for a career in this profession?
The right training should include theory as well as practical. It’s like an art where you need to know what you are doing but at the same time implement it correctly.
