Discipline is required in the virtual classroom for effective learning
This pandemic has proved to be a ‘black swan’ moment for the education sector, especially for the teachers, who have transformed themselves to cope with technology and continue the teaching-learning process despite all odds.
Here are some of my learnings from teaching in the time of COVID-19.
● Learning is no longer limited within the confines of a physical classroom, time and territory.
● Lesson plans have to be more interesting, with visual data and interactive platforms, to dispel distractions.
● Teachers are no longer instructors of mere facts and figures but have assumed the role of mentors, counsellors and guides.
● Students with special needs can be catered to by regulating pace, pedagogy and curriculum.
● Continuous upgrading of teaching skills using technology is essential.
● Discipline is required in the virtual classroom for effective learning.
● Thorough preparation of existing knowledge before implementation of curriculum is vital as every move or step is recorded; learning to perform under a constant scanner.
● Evaluation is now shifting from assessing rote learning of facts to conceptual understanding, application and honing of critical thinking skills in the learner.
● Learners have the advantage of exposure to the best global systems of pedagogy and take responsibility to apply themselves. Ultimate success depends on their ability to evolve as individuals with high standards of ethical and moral responsibility.
● The ‘digital divide’ is a real challenge as many do not have the privilege of internet facilities and gadgets.
● Balance of screen-time and real-time activities is essential for all stakeholders to ensure digital detox and optimum efficiency.
● Conscious care of socio-emotional needs through open communication and assessment of mental health is necessary.
● Collaboration between parents, teachers, students, management and other stakeholders is the key for effective learning outcomes.
