From optometry to psychology, NSHM School of Health Sciences provides extensive learning opportunities for students
With wellbeing as the mantra of the modern world, the prospect of an allied health professional is bright. Be it in the field of diagnostics, therapy or any healthcare-related support services, there are plenty of opportunities for an aspiring student. And this is where the NSHM School of Health Sciences comes in.
The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Optometry, Vision Science and Allied Health Sciences. This includes Dietetics and Nutrition, Yoga, Medical Lab, Technology and Psychology. The institute, earlier known under the name of HC Garg Institute of Science and Technology, was notified as a pharmacy college in 2005.
“NSHM also has strong campus placement. If you look at the record from the past five years, you will notice that we have done much better than many other colleges. We are also keen on organising PhD programmes and research projects under DST, ICMR and CSIR, and have many research projects with Emami. Other than that, we also conduct mock tests, examinations and tutorials to crack the competitive examinations so that our students have a bright career,” said Dr. Subhasis Maity, Director, NSHM School of Health Sciences.
NSHM School of Health Sciences has four departments at present with a total of 13 courses that provide an immersive learning environment with a career-oriented training approach and well-skilled mentors to guide students throughout. These courses include:
Department of Allied Health
The department of Allied Health Science offers five different courses — BSc in Medical Lab Technology, BSc in Yoga, MSc in Dietetics and Nutrition, MSc in Yoga and Master of Public Health.
Department of Pharmaceutical Technology
The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology offers four courses — BPharm, BVoc in Medical Imaging and Technology (Yoga), MPharma in Pharmaceutics, and MPharma in Pharmacology.
Department of Psychology
The Department of Psychology offers two courses, BSc in Behavioural and Applied Psychology and MSc in Clinical Psychology.
Department of Vision Science
The Department of Vision Science offers two courses, Bachelor of Optometry and Master of Optometry.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology at NSHM was NBA-accredited in 2016 and NAAC in 2018. It is the oldest department on the NSHM Kolkata campus. The department has also ranked first among the state’s private colleges and 61st by NIRF among 300 participating institutions.
It’s not just regular academics that NSHM focuses on, it’s also about giving students an overall experience of working as a professional in the field of health sciences.
