The prize, which carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, goes to candidates with effective contributions in the field of assistive technology to empower the disabled.
The Neilom Prize is given to the best outgoing student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi every year. For 2019, the much-deserving winner of this award has been Piyush Chanana, whose research contributed towards the development of Smartcane, an electronic travel aid for people with blindness and visual impairment.
The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, goes to candidates with effective contributions in the field of assistive technology to empower the disabled. Mr Chanana, who was part of the Assistech Lab at IIT Delhi for more than eight years, has recently completed his PhD. According to IIT Delhi, his research has immensely contributed towards the evolution of Smartcane, which has come to the help of users not just in India but around the world as well.

The coveted prize is given by the Neilom Foundation, Maryland, USA, which was established by Professor Davinder K Anand in the honour of his son Dilip “Neil” Anand. The Foundation’s vision is to support activities to improve the lives of young people working at the intersection of education and technology.
On the occasion, Professor Anand said, “We are very pleased to support the transformative work of the Assistech laboratory at IIT-Delhi, and proud of the Neilom Fellows that they select. The technologies they have developed light a beacon of hope for the visually impaired and represent a significant step forward in helping them live a joyful life.”
