Associate professor of IIT, Kharagpur, Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2020 in the environmental science category – Earth Atmosphere Ocean and Planetary Sciences.
Among the 12 recipients of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2020 for showing distinctive potential in the field of science and technology is an associate professor of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee.
He is associated with the department of geology and geophysics and the school of environmental science and engineering. He was nominated in the environmental science category – Earth Atmosphere Ocean and Planetary Sciences. The prestigious award will be presented by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
Dr. Mukherjee’s expertise lies in groundwater exploration for suitable and sustainable drinking water. His work has been nationally and internationally acclaimed. In order to detect the presence of Arsenic in the Gangetic delta, his research group has recently developed an AI-based predicting model. His demonstration of interdisciplinary research on quantitative and qualitative changes on the level of groundwater has helped to make national water missions and policies.
