Award for innovative blast-resistant helmet design
A professor from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, has received the ‘NSG Counter-Terrorism Innovator Award 2021’ for his innovative design of a blast-resistant helmet.
Shailesh Ganpule was conferred the honour in a ceremony held at NSG campus, Manesar, Haryana.
I feel proud to have made my contribution to protect many precious lives of our security forces who face continuous threats and do perilous jobs while handling explosives and IEDs, said Ganpule.
Prof. Shailesh Ganpule @iitroorkee will be conferred with the “NSG Counter-IED & Counter-Terrorism Innovator Award” on 11/06/2021 at 09.30 AM for his outstanding contribution & innovation in the design & development of Blast Resistant Helmet.

Ajit K Chaturvedi, director, IIT Roorkee, said, “I am delighted to share that professor Shailesh Ganpule, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at IIT Roorkee has been conferred the Counter-IED & Counter-Terrorism Innovator Award of NSG for his outstanding innovation in the design and development of a blast-resistant helmet. This recognition will boost our efforts for developing indigenous technologies.”
The blast-resistant helmet is important to reduce blast-induced traumatic brain injury which has been identified as a signature wound in recent asymmetric conflicts.
Military helmets focus on protecting against ballistic impact, with little to no attention for protection against blasts. The ‘Blast-Resistant Helmet’ designed by Ganpule is an advanced version of conventional helmets so as to protect military personnel from IED-induced blast waves with a technology readiness of 4.
Ganpule said that the design of blast-resistant helmets posed significant challenges as it involved trade-offs between various aspects.
The main focus was on mitigating the effects of blast waves underneath the helmet along with violent head rotation while also catering to uncompromised ballistic protection, he added.
