The Medical Council of India said that final year MBBS students can join internships only after passing the terminal examinations.
The Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI) released a circular on Tuesday stating that no batch of students should be permitted to move to the next level of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course without an examination. The council said that final year MBBS students can join internships only after passing the terminal examinations.
MCI has decided to release the advisory after considering various queries received from students, colleges, stakeholders and universities asking about reopening of medical colleges and conduction of examination.
According to the advisory, the colleges were directed to complete the first MBBS course within two months of reopening of colleges. Thereafter, the MBBS university exams should be completed as soon as possible, preferably within a month.
MCI has asked the universities to conduct the pending supplementary examinations scheduled in the first half of 2020 as soon as possible so that the students waiting to appear for examinations after completing the course need not have to wait for the formal reopening of colleges. Such students will be joining college/hospitals for internships after passing final exams.
It also suggested that relaxations provided for conducting the final year postgraduate exam regarding the appointment of examiners and the exam patterns, would also be applicable.
The council also advised alternatives to get external examiners for conducting the entire examination process. For practicals and clinical examinations, the council suggested alternative methods of skill evaluation that can simulate case scenarios, objectives structured clinical or practical exams.
MCI stated that the advisory is a one-time measure in view of Covid-19.
