For the intermediate students, the online classes will begin from August 2 and undergraduate admissions will begin as soon as the plus two results are declared.
The latest University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines have made the St. Xavier’s University rework its plans for final semester exams at the last moment. The announcement of results for the final-semester exams, which the varsity conducted online in June, were expected on July 10, but the university has now decided to conduct online exams again sometime in August, primarily because the lockdown is expected to continue till the end of July.
In an exclusive chat with ABP Education, St. Xavier's Vice Chancellor Father Felix Raj said, “Since the UGC came out with a new advisory on Monday, which is binding for all universities, we will also have to abide by them. We had initially planned the results according to the UGC advisory in April, we worked on that and even had an internal assessment examination during the lockdown.”
Giving us a lowdown on the meeting held at St Xavier’s on July 9, Father Raj, said, “We have planned it out in the meeting today. The new advisory says exams must be completed by the end of September, which means the results will be out by October. We have decided to have online exams sometime in August because of the lockdown till end of July. And we will try to publish the results by end of August.”
Talking about the break-up of the altered assessment scheme for final year students, Fr Raj, said, “We’ve already had examinations for 50 marks, now our online examinations for students of final semester will be for 50 marks. There will be no weightage given to previous semesters.” Previously, 50 percent weightage was being given to previous semesters’ aggregate, 25% was from previous internal assessment, and the rest of the 25% weightage was based on online exams based on virtual classes during lockdown.
Speaking about the intermediate and first-year students, he said, “Intermediate students will have online classes beginning August 2. Only online classes. Once the plus two results are out, we can start the undergraduate admissions. We are expecting results to be out by end of July. By end of August, we will complete the admission process and begin classes by September 3. Whether online or offline, it depends on the situation then.”
