International educational institutions in countries such as the UK and Australia are running into significant deprivation due to a potential decline in the enrolments of international students.
Going by a multi-dimensional higher education ranking compiler, on an average, Australian universities are at a 20.8 percent institutional budgetary drop. Whereas, the UK universities can go down to 14 percent of budgetary loss. Alongside this, the American and European universities can also encounter a loss in their institutional budget by 7 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively.
Comparatively, the research-based institutions that enroll more international students are most likely to be affected by the ongoing pandemic than the teaching-focused institutions as another research suggests.
Previously, an estimation suggested that universities in the UK may face losses of between £1.4 billion and £4.3bn due to decline of enrolment of international students.
A European ranking system, U-Multirank, pointed out that among the European universities, UK has 54 percent, Latvia has 38 percent, Bulgaria has 35 percent and Ireland has 35 percent of “relatively high” dependence on fees.
“The Covid-19 crisis appears to have a dramatic effect on the mobility patterns of international fee-paying students. They now hesitate to apply for enrollment in universities in other countries, postpone their decisions to do so, or chose an institution closer to home,” said the co-project leader of U-Multirank, Frans van Vught.
