One-on-one picnics, coffee meets and after-school activities to be allowed
British prime minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce the reopening of all schools in England from March 8. Johnson also aims to lift the national coronavirus lockdown in the coming months, according to officials.
Johnson will also state the rules for social contact to be followed from March 29. Only six people or two households can arrange any outdoor activity together, which also includes private garden tours and sports events such as tennis and soccer, according to the rules.
Vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi said the reopening is being planned cautiously by the government with slow and informative steps.
The reopening is also expected to come as a sign of relief for parents who have been home-schooling their children as well as juggling responsibilities and work. England’s third national lockdown began in early January which has been one of the driving forces behind the low productivity among employers in the country.
Johnson is also ready to discuss the reopening plans with his cabinet ministers, before putting out a statement through the House of Commons and televised broadcasts.
“Our priority has always been getting children back into school which we know is crucial for their education and wellbeing,” said Johnson. He emphasised on the government’s “cautious” approaches towards getting the country out of the pandemic.
Our decisions will be made on the latest data at every step, and we will be cautious about this approach so that we do not undo the progress we have achieved so far and the sacrifices each and every one of you has made to keep yourself and others safe.— Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) February 22, 2021
The UK government is further preparing to ease the restrictions uniformly across England with four steps which have to be met:
These four steps are to be met one after the other, starting from March 8.
