India accounts as the second largest student market in London
The number of Indian students studying at universities in the United Kingdom has risen from its third place in 2018-19 to second place, accounting for one of the largest international student markets for London in 2019-20.
According to the fresh data released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), around 13,435 Indian students are enrolled at universities across London, which is 87% more than the previous year's number, which was a total of 7,185 students.
The latest data shows an impressive period of growth for India. Lalage Clay, director of education and talent at London and Partners, said that the new figures confirm the status of London’s world-leading universities. She also emphasised on opportunities that Indian students are provided within the UK, and believes that the students choose Britain to receive a first-class education and cultural experience.
Although China has maintained its first place in the ranking with 29,940 students, India’s 2019-20 numbers demonstrate a huge increase when compared to its numbers in 2017-18.
Clay also stated that the reintroduction of the two-year post-study visa for international students has helped overseas graduates look for employment in the UK after their graduation.
The overall data shows that 55,465 Indian students have enrolled in various higher education institutions across the UK, especially in London. HESA reveals that the total number of international students at various universities across England has risen to 135,490 with the figures showing a rise of up to 8.4%. The statistics agency also registers that there is an uplift in the overall international students in London for the seventh consecutive year.
