US signs Gandhi-King scholarly exchange initiative into law

US President Donald Trump has signed the Gandhi-King Scholarly Exchange Initiative into law to help establish an educational forum between the US and India.

The exchange will allow scholars to study the work and legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

The new law authorises a sanction of USD 1 million by 2025 and USD 30 million in 2021 for the US-India Gandhi-King Development Foundation and USD 2 million in 2021 for the Gandhi-King Global Academy. The law had been initiated by civil rights icon and US congressman John Lewis after his India visit to mark the 50th anniversary of King’s pilgrimage to India.

The act will allow scholars to research and resolve conflicts and current policy challenges based on the principles of Gandhi and King Jr. It will authorise the US and India to establish an educational forum for scholars from both countries focusing on the legacies of Gandhi and King Jr.
